Book Review: Dawnshard by Brandon Sanderson

A beautiful exploration of some of the newer characters to The Stormlight Archive.

Dawnshard was a beautiful addition to the Stormlight Archive. A lot like Edgedancer, Dawnshard is an exploration of a new-ish character to the story, where we learn more about her position in the greater story and what her potential is.

"Sometimes you need to accept what you've lost, then move forward. Then you can instead realize what you've gained."

This book is also a beautiful exploration of an existing character as well, one that may be intially written off as comedic relief but is truly more interesting than that.

Dawnshard is a much quicker read than the formal Stormlight books, but that is okay. It's a side story, one definitely worth reading about before heading into Rhythm of War.

I also really adore the format?? I like the ebooks but this is a beautiful hardcover that I enjoyed having in my hands. I'm a pretty tactile person - I really appreciate a nice binding, good paper, etc. This is a very nice printing, and it looks great on my shelf.

“That was the thing about omens - they were made up. Imagined signals of something nebulous. So why not make them up to be something positive?”

Dawnshard was a fun adventure that builds upon the existing story in a way that creates a lot more depth and breadth. This really sets me up for book 4, Rhythm of War, which I'm excited to get to!

Synopsis: When a ghost ship is discovered, its crew presumed dead after trying to reach the storm-shrouded island Akinah, Navani Kholin must send an expedition to make sure the island hasn't fallen into enemy hands. Knights Radiant who fly too near find their Stormlight suddenly drained, so the voyage must be by sea.

Shipowner Rysn Ftori lost the use of her legs but gained the companionship of Chiri-Chiri, a Stormlight-ingesting winged larkin, a species once thought extinct. Now Rysn's pet is ill, and any hope for Chiri-Chiri’s recovery can be found only at the ancestral home of the larkin: Akinah. With the help of Lopen, the formerly one- armed Windrunner, Rysn must accept Navani's quest and sail into the perilous storm from which no one has returned alive. If the crew cannot uncover the secrets of the hidden island city before the wrath of its ancient guardians falls upon them, the fate of Roshar and the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.
