Book Review: Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros
One of the most anticipated books of 2025 is finally here.

Potentially one of the most anticipated books of 2025, Onyx Flame received a lot of hype in the last year!
As soon as my book arrived, I noticed that it was a little difficult to get into, which I attributed to the time between now and Iron Flame. Having read the first two books in late 2023, it had been over a year since I've familiarized myself with the author's style and the storylines. Once I got into the swing of it, I was better able to figure out who was who and what was where. However, I did find out later that a lot of other people had the same trouble I did at the beginning!
"She is warmth and light and air and love."
As a whole, Onyx Storm definitely felt more cohesive than Iron Flame. The rhythm of the story felt good, even if the start was a little rocky. While the action scenes were certainly exciting, I really enjoyed the slower parts where conversations were being had. They felt a little more thoughtfully crafted.
I also liked that Yarros included a few other perspectives toward the end when it really counted. I liked getting different points of view during some major scenes, and not just Violet's.

"Pain isn’t a competition,” I assure him. “There’s always enough to go around."
In all, I liked Onyx Storm better than Iron Flame... but I think I liked Fourth Wing best of all. Onyx Storm was exciting all the way to the very last page, but it took me much longer than I expected to finish it. I also wish I had done a little more research on the story again before diving in, but it is what it is.
Rating: ★★★★

Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves―her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

But a storm is coming... and not everyone can survive its wrath.
